What's in My Speech Therapy Bag?

Updated: Jul 5

It is May and that means there are so many great thematic activities you and your child can engage in! Flowers, kites, Spring, baby animals, Memorial Day, Mother's Day... the list goes on and on!!

For this month, I decided my speech therapy bag would be filled with BUGS!!!

That's right.... BUGS!!! Every child likes or LOVES bugs!! From children who love to search high and low for the creepy and crawly bugs to catch to children who love to color a beautiful picture of a butterfly.... you can not go wrong with learning with BUGS!!

In my bag, I have something for all ages! For the younger children, I will be reading The Hungry Caterpillar and pairing it with a colorful food sorting game. This is great to target color and number concepts, the action "eat/ate", days of the week, and story sequencing! For my speech children, target words: eat, bug, on, big, ouch, day, are great to work on motor movement.

For older children, I have a couple activities in my bag for them! Giggle Wiggle game, The Ladybug game, Ants in the Pants game, and Cooties game are perfect to pair with any speech and language task. I also have a caterpillar magnetic fine motor puzzle I like to target "color + in" for the children who are working on language concepts or motor speech movement. This is also great for repetitive counting! I also have a simple bug print out that children can put stickers on or use bingo daubers for as they work along with their speech or language task.

For my last item in my bag, this one is great for any age..... toy bugs!! I love to use these in sensory bins, by themselves to target categorization, going on scavenger hunts, and simply using "I like it" and "I don't like it" phrases.

Toys bugs

Some other great suggestions:

  • Go on a bug hunt outside and take pictures of what you find

  • Make "Dirt and Worms" dessert!

  • Find a fun and free bug craft and make it

  • Go to your local library and check out books about bugs

  • Get messy and play with bug toys in shaving cream or pudding

  • Create a butterfly garden

  • Make bugs out of Play-Doh or Legos

  • Paint rock bugs and place them in the garden

I hope you all enjoy the fun of BUGS!!!
